Angel started it all! The Sanctuary is named Angel’s Pond because several years ago I came across this precious, young Canada goose with Angel Wing. Due to his deformity, he could not fly and was eventually left behind by his family. I named him Angel and it didn’t take long before he stole my heart.

Although I could not legally cage him inside a coop for protection I knew I had to feed him and keep an eye on him. My sweet husband built him floating docks on the pond for safety from predators. We made sure he had friends by purchasing domestic geese (the American Buff’s) and several ducks. I befriended him but made sure he always knew he was a wild goose There are days he will come up pretty close and days he still heads to the other side of the pond when he sees me. He trusts me but he trusts his other Canada Geese friends more and that’s how it should be. :-)

Angel eats grass of course but we do leave out all flock pellets and cracked corn for him all year round.

Sweet Hurley came to us earlier this year. He was an Angel wing found at a park in Nashville, TN. I got a call one day from a girl who had spotted him and was trying to find a better spot for him. She had called a licensed wildlife rehabber and they had our property on their list for approved drop offs. He was currently being chased by dogs and kids on a regular basis. Because of this he struggled to find food. He arrived very skinny and tattered and he had angel wing in both of his wings.

Once he arrived, he quickly bonded to Angel and all the other wild geese and settled in. While being here he has gained weight, strength and a permanent home where he can be wild and have less human interference. Like Angel, his care is minimal. He eats mostly grass but
